Senate Republicans Have ‘Rich People’ Problems

via Dave McCormick

GOP candidate David McCormick, a wealthy former CEO, exemplifies the Republican strategy of recruiting wealthy candidates to close the fundraising gap with Democrats.

Despite successful fundraising, wealthy candidates face attacks on their financial ties and business records.

“I am spending half my time with donors,” McCormick said. “I’m everywhere across the country, mostly with really wealthy people.”

Democrats aim to portray GOP candidates as out-of-touch billionaires.

The GOP views the trade-off of vulnerabilities as worthwhile for fundraising advantages.

“Republicans’ Senate candidates have enough baggage to fill a bank vault,” Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Tommy Garcia said. “Their financial vulnerabilities ― coupled with their numerous other flaws and disqualifying policy positions ― will lead their campaigns to defeat.”

“A handful of negative stories now are 100% worth having extra points on television in October,” a GOP Senate campaign strategist said. “Republican candidates have been getting killed in fundraising for years now.”

Democrats hope to counter wealthy GOP candidates by highlighting their ties to foreign governments and prioritization of the ultra-wealthy.

The strategy involves emphasizing candidates’ backgrounds in military and business to contrast with career politicians.

“David McCormick’s history of selling out Pennsylvanians to boost his own bottom line has left him entangled with foreign governments like China and Saudi Arabia, and at the beck and call of his billionaire backers,” Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesperson TaNisha Cameron said.

“His record of prioritizing the ultra-wealthy and big corporations at the expense of working families is a non-starter with Pennsylvania voters.”

“Hovde is an out of touch hedge fund manager who’s built his career catering to millionaires and billionaires,” Senate Majority PAC spokeswoman Hannah Menchhoff said.

“Eric Hovde’s experience as a job creator rather than a career politician makes him a strong candidate to flip Wisconsin’s Senate seat this year,” Sen. Steve Daines said.
