Democratic Minnesota state senator stripped of committee assignments after burglary arrest

via CBS

Democratic Minnesota state senator Nicole Mitchell has been removed from her committee assignments and barred from caucus meetings after being arrested last week for suspected burglary at her stepmother’s home.

Mitchell claims she entered through a window to retrieve sentimental items from her late father, but police charged her with first-degree burglary.

Senate majority leader Erin Murphy said questions remain but Mitchell will be relieved of duties while the case is reviewed in the Senate and courts.

“While the case is under review both in the Senate and in the courts, Senator Mitchell will be relieved of her committee assignments and removed from caucus meetings,” Murphy said.

Senate Republicans had filed an ethics complaint, forcing a vote to immediately investigate.

Mitchell, elected in 2022, previously worked in meteorology and serves in the Air National Guard, representing district 47.
