Democrats Shut Down Senate Trial for Mayorkas Impeachment Charges

via NBC

The Senate voted along party lines to end the impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Democrats voted unanimously that the charges against him for refusing to enforce immigration laws did not rise to the level of “high crimes.”

Republicans attempted to delay the vote and extend the trial period, but Democrats pushed through their motions.

The House had impeached Mayorkas for willful failure to comply with asylum laws requiring detention of applicants.

Republicans argued Democrats wanted to minimize attention on the damage of Mayorkas’ policies.

“The evidence is devastating,” Sen. John Kennedy said. “It will gut them like a fish.”

Mayorkas has justified his lax immigration enforcement as prioritizing business needs over costs to Americans and the law.

The votes ensured a swift end to the trial with no conviction.
