Parents of Michigan School Shooter Sentenced to 10-15 Years for ‘Lack of Acts’ to Halt Shooting

via Detroit Free Press

The parents of the Michigan high school shooter were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison.

In November 2021, their son Ethan Crumbley shot and killed four people at Oxford High School.

Jennifer and James Crumbley were charged with failing to secure the gun their son used in the attack and ignoring signs of his deteriorating mental health.

At trial, prosecutors argued their simple actions could have prevented the shooting.

Jennifer testified to having an affair and that her husband bought the gun used on Black Friday.

Both denied knowing Ethan brought the gun to school.

The judge said the convictions were not about parenting but confirmed repeated failures that could have stopped the tragedy.

“These convictions are not about poor parenting, these convictions confirm repeated acts, or lack of acts, that could have halted an oncoming runaway train,” Judge Cheryl Matthews said.

Jennifer and James Crumbley were each convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each victim killed by their son.
