Michigan Gov. Faces Backlash for Migrant Rent Program After Illegal Was Charged with Murder

via FOX

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is facing criticism for her program that provides $500 monthly housing subsidies to private homeowners who take in migrants, after a previously deported illegal alien was charged with murdering a 25-year-old woman.

Brandon Ortiz-Vite, from Mexico, was arrested and charged with felony murder, carjacking and weapons offenses for the killing of Ruby Garcia.

Whitmer’s Newcomer Rental Subsidy program would provide up to a year of assistance to shelter “refugees” aside from state shelters.

“Payments will be made in three-month installments; first payment will be issued upon the application being approved,” the state subsidy guidance states. “Additional payments will be made thereafter.”

Republicans, including Whitmer’s 2022 gubernatorial opponent Tudor Dixon, blasted Whitmer for enabling Biden’s open border policies and risking neighborhood safety by handing out cash without vetting immigrants, calling for her to cancel the program in light of the murder.

Whitmer is “enabling Joe Biden’s open border policies by handing out cash to anyone who will take in unvetted illegal immigrants, undoubtedly risking the safety of our neighborhoods and communities,” Dixon said.

“After the murder of Ruby Garcia less than a week ago, Whitmer should immediately cancel this program and demand Biden secure the border for the good of Michigan citizens,” Dixon added.
