Stephen Colbert Sent Legal Notice After Shameless ‘Joke’ About Princess Kate

via CBS

Celebrities like Stephen Colbert are facing backlash for joking about rumors surrounding Catherine, Princess of Wales’s recent absence from public life while recovering from major surgery.

In March, Colbert speculated on his late night show about tabloid rumors that Prince William was having an affair with a family friend, Rose Hanbury.

“Internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband and the future king of England, William, having an affair,” Colbert said. “So I think we all know who the alleged other woman is. Say it with me: the Marchioness of Cholmondeley—what a beautiful name.”

Hanbury has since sent a legal notice to Colbert, arguing the rumors are false and defamatory.

Many criticize Colbert and others for spreading cruel, unfounded gossip about Catherine’s health issues at a difficult time for the royal family.

The “rumor appears to have entered into the mainstream media recently as a result of another joke made about it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We have written on our client’s behalf to CBS and various other reputable media organisations to confirm that the allegation is false,” Hanbury’s lawyers stated.

While the internet circulated conspiracy theories about her disappearance, Buckingham Palace had made clear she would not return to duties until recovering fully after her surgery.

Colbert is now facing calls to apologize for platforming hurtful rumors without evidence during Catherine’s battle with cancer.
