Commission approves establishment of database to track all firearms

via BBC News

A commission from the European Parliament and Council has agreed to create a centralized database to track the estimated 35 million privately owned firearms across the European Union.

The database builds on a previous move to electronic gun store records.

“There are still inadequate controls on the import and export of handguns. In Latin America for instance, many illegal activities and shootings use handguns smuggled in from Europe; revising the inadequate rules was more than overdue,” Bernd Lange, a member of the parliament’s trade committee, stated.

It is being implemented amid concerns over gang violence and terrorism, and with the goal of tighter controls on gun imports and exports following accusations that illegally smuggled European handguns have fueled crime in Latin America.

The plan continues a long trend of increasingly strict gun control policies in Europe, particularly in Britain, where one study found violence exploded after major gun restrictions were passed in 1997, with Britain then having a higher rate of overall violence than the U.S. and South Africa.
