Caitlyn Jenner takes surprising stand on NY banning trans women athletes

via This Morning

Former Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner voiced support for a New York county’s ban on transgender athletes participating in girls’ and women’s public sports, claiming it protects cisgender athletes.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed the order barring trans athletes.

“Trans women are competing against women, taking valuable opportunities for the long protected class under Title IX and causing physical harm,” Jenner said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James, both Democrats, oppose the ban and accuse Blakeman, a Republican, of bullying transgender youth.

James sued to overturn the ban, arguing it violates anti-discrimination laws, while Blakeman countersued alleging James’ action violates equal protection.

“It’s biology, it is not about exclusion or not being tolerant,” Jenner said.

“Not only was the executive order legal, but we had an obligation to defend it,” Blakeman said.

The New York Civil Liberties Union also sued the county, alleging discrimination.

Advocates argue trans athletes deserve support and inclusion, not exclusion, and that athletic bodies rather than government should determine participation standards.

“Trans people who play sports need support and affirmation, not to be a political target,” NYCLU attorney Gabriella Larios stated. “Nassau County’s cynical attempt to shut them out of public spaces is a blatant violation of our state’s civil and human rights laws.”
