Mexican President Calls U.S. Government Immoral After Media Reports Point to Cartel Funding His Campaign

via NBC News

Mexican President Lopez Obrador criticized the U.S. government for allowing three news outlets to publish exposés alleging that the Sinaloa Cartel funneled millions into his failed 2006 presidential campaign.

The reports detail how the cartel sent cash to his campaign through its top lieutenants, including Edgar “La Barbie” Villarreal.

Lopez Obrador dismissed the claims as slander and accused the U.S. government of immoral practices.

“I don’t denounce the journalists, I don’t denounce the outlets,” Lopez Obrador said.

“I denounce the United States Government for allowing these immoral practices.”

His press secretary highlighted the timing and coordination of the stories, suggesting they were politically motivated attacks.
